Window Shopping: A Fiasco

While discussing about sabbatical, one of my friends had suggested, "Do at least one thing that you have never done earlier in life each day during this sabbatical", and i took this advice quite literally. So, yesterday, i overcame my dislike for shopping and went for "Window Shopping" all on my own. I have done window shopping, to kill time while waiting for someone, or a couple of times, just by accompanying a friend who wished to do so. But doing on my own willfully, this happened for the first time.

When i stepped out, i messaged her, mentioning the same, her response "Share your experience once you are done". So here goes the blog.

First thing after deciding so, i called up another friend of mine, who happens to be a shopaholic. She has always been a helping hand, when it came for shopping. When i told her, that this is what am going to do for today, for next few minutes, she was just laughing out loud, and after sharing her words of wisdom, she simply said, call me once you are in mall.

So at around 3 pm yesterday, i started off, reached a nearby mall by 3:10 pm. And like an obedient student, i called her up, and shared the store names which i could visit. The ones she suggested, i had managed to cover in just 15 min time, and then i was like, there is only one store i can think of visiting, coz there is something i am running out of, and need to buy. Her reaction "Give rest to your brain, do stuff which doesn't need it. Tell your brain, take a break, we will see again in the evening". And my reaction "such a nutcase you are". In short, i finished looking around in that mall in less than 25 min. Then i thought let's go and visit another one, which was at some distance. While i was waiting for my cab to arrive, somehow managed picking up stuff that i actually needed. So as per me, my visit to this mall was fruitful. While it was a fiasco in terms of "Window shopping".

After spending some time on road, and pestering a couple of friends with the disaster i had just encountered while "Window Shopping", i arrived at the second mall. It took me a total of 10 min to walk the entire place (thanks to my walking sprees these days, 5 km in an hour), and a realization that i can not survive this Window shopping thing. Thankfully, i got my grey cells working, and had my Eureka moment, as i had to buy a gift for a friend's kid. Without loosing a moment, i rushed to Hamleys, and spent another 45 min to find a gift for the kiddo am supposed to meet this weekend. Again, i could pat my back, for being so proactive, and utilizing the time so productively.  <rolling eyes>

Atlast, i decided to put a stop to this experiment, and was home by 6 pm. A total of 180 min, out of which about 50 min were spent on road commuting, and about 60 min in buying the two things, i actually did "Window shopping" for not more than 45 min; concluding that am so bad at these kind of stuffs.

While on the way back, i messaged the same friend, sharing the experience, she said, "you should pick some mediocre stuff and not extremes". I was like, guess the problem is not the stuff but my OCD of doing everything perfectly, and efficiently.

Am still thinking on the lines of her suggestion - Doing something new everyday. Let's see what today has in store for me!
